Healthcare experts in the UAE are encouraging parents to pay closer attention to their children’s growth patterns and seek medical advice when they notice persistent changes or concerns.

Merck has launched an awareness message highlighting how everyday observations, such as how frequently a child needs larger clothes, can prompt parents to consider whether their growth is progressing consistently. While clothing size is not a medical measure, tracking changes over time can help parents identify when a discussion with a healthcare professional may be appropriate.

One condition associated with impaired growth is growth hormone deficiency (GHD), a rare disorder in which the body produces insufficient growth hormone needed for normal growth and development. Global estimates suggest GHD affects approximately one in 4,000–10,000 children.

Ahmed Fadl, General Manager – UAE & Gulf, Merck said: “Every child grows at their own pace, but when parents notice something that seems different about their child’s growth, it is important to feel confident asking questions. Raising a concern with a healthcare professional can be a simple first step towards understanding whether further assessment is needed.”

“At GEMS, we monitor children’s growth as part of our approach to supporting their health and wellbeing, and our clinicians refer children for specialist assessment when they identify significant concerns. Parents also have an important role to play by noticing how their child is growing over time. If they have concerns, speaking with a paediatrician can help determine whether further assessment is needed,” said Dr. Mirrah Agha-Kandil, Group Medical Director, GEMS Education.

Schools and healthcare teams can also help identify children who may require further evaluation. Experts stress that children naturally grow at different rates, but persistent concerns should not be dismissed as something a child will necessarily outgrow.

Parents who are concerned about their child’s growth are advised to speak with a paediatrician, who can review growth history and determine whether further assessment is needed.
