The UAE has become the first country in the world to approve an expanded use of RINVOQ (upadacitinib) for the treatment of non-segmental vitiligo.
The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has approved the treatment for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with non-segmental vitiligo whose condition requires systemic therapy.
Taken once daily, RINVOQ provides an additional oral treatment option for eligible patients. The EDE said the approval reflects the UAEโs position in adopting pharmaceutical innovations and accelerating patient access to new treatments.

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune skin condition in which the immune system attacks melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment. It causes pale or white patches that can appear on different parts of the body.
Non-segmental vitiligo is the most common form and typically causes symmetrical patches that may gradually spread. Segmental vitiligo, which accounts for around 10% of cases, usually affects one side of the body and tends to stabilise more quickly.

Vitiligo affects an estimated 0.5% to 1% of the global population, although some estimates suggest the actual prevalence may be higher. The condition can also have a significant psychological impact, with patients experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem and social stigma.
The EDE has advised people who notice unusual changes in skin colour to seek specialist medical advice for early diagnosis, proper assessment and appropriate treatment.
