Juba, South Sudan: The World Health Organization (WHO) has received 19 metric tons of emergency medical supplies to strengthen South Sudan’s response to the ongoing cholera outbreak and replenish critical emergency stockpiles.

Valued at US$120,000, the shipment includes cholera response kits, Inter-Agency Emergency Health Kits, laboratory reagents, rapid diagnostic test kits, and tents to expand temporary isolation capacity. The supplies are expected to support approximately 134,000 people in cholera-affected areas.

Funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), the supplies will enable rapid deployment to affected communities, improve disease detection, strengthen case management, and enhance infection prevention efforts.

South Sudan continues to face a severe humanitarian and public health crisis driven by conflict, displacement, food insecurity, flooding, and limited access to healthcare, increasing the risk of infectious disease outbreaks.

In partnership with the Ministry of Health, WHO is responding to multiple health threats, including cholera, anthrax, circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus, hepatitis E, measles, and mpox, while strengthening preparedness for Ebola virus disease and other emerging health emergencies.

Dr. Humphrey Karamagi, WHO Representative for South Sudan, said “the donated supplies will strengthen rapid response operations, improve access to essential medicines and protective equipment, and help reduce preventable illness and deaths through coordinated emergency response efforts.”
