SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi has announced the birth of a healthy Pacific walrus calf, the first of its kind to be born in a zoological facility across the region. The calf was delivered by mother Smooshi under the supervision of the park’s veterinary and animal care teams, with both reported to be in good health.
The newborn is now settling into the Arctic Realm’s walrus habitat, a purpose-built environment that replicates Arctic temperature conditions and natural light cycles. During this early developmental stage, the calf will remain alongside Smooshi, depending on her for nourishment, security, and behavioural learning.

The birth carries significance beyond the park itself. SeaWorld Abu Dhabi uses its walrus population to run educational programmes for visitors, raising awareness about Arctic marine ecosystems, the effects of climate change, and accelerating sea ice loss, environmental pressures that directly threaten walrus populations in the wild.
