Dr. Ibrahim Fawzy to discuss the challenges and future of ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), particularly in trauma care and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest programs.

Key Highlights from the Conversation:

On ECMO in Trauma Patients:
Dr. Fawzy explains that one of the biggest challenges in using ECMO for trauma cases lies in identifying the right patientsโ€”particularly those with brain injuries. The severity of brain injury can significantly impact outcomes, and this area needs more research and refined prognostication tools.

On Spreading ECMO Knowledge:
SWACC ELSO is on the right path, but the future lies in โ€œTrain the Trainerโ€ models, endorsed ECMO courses, and building capacity in underserved regions. Dr. Fawzy stresses the importance of reaching countries with limited access and providing support like scholarships, partnerships, and on-site mentorship.

On Pre-Hospital ECMO Programs:
Dr. Fawzy, who leads one of the most successful pre-hospital ECMO programs, emphasizes tailoring strategies to local resources. His advice? Donโ€™t copy-paste models from other countries. Instead, adapt them for cost-effectiveness, relevance, and long-term sustainability. What works in one country may not work in anotherโ€”but collaboration and learning from each other is key.

Dr. Fawzy recalls a quote from ECMO pioneer Dr. Robert Bartlett:

Ten years from now, the patients and families wonโ€™t know how ECMO worked without complications. But we will. And itโ€™s our responsibility to keep improving.
