Jovy's story
SHARE

March 2025- For 42-year-old Jovy, a childhood accident left more than just a physical scar, it shaped decades of emotional turmoil and self-doubt. After 35 years of struggling with the trauma of losing an eye, she has finally found renewed confidence and healing through a ground-breaking oculoplastic reconstruction at Medcare Hospital, Sharjah.

Performed by Dr. Fairooz P. Manjandavida, a Specialist Oculoplastic Surgeon, the complex procedure involved socket reconstruction and the fitting of a customized prosthetic eye, restoring not only Joviโ€™s appearance but also her self-esteem and quality of life.

Joviโ€™s life took a devastating turn at just seven years old when an innocent game ended in catastrophe, a sharp stick struck her eye, causing irreparable damage that led to the removal of her eyeball. Over time, her eye socket shrank, making it impossible for her to wear a prosthetic eye. What began as a physical injury evolved into an emotional battle, as she became increasingly self-conscious, avoiding social interactions and resigning herself to a life of insecurity.

โ€œFor decades, I believed there was no solution for me. I felt incomplete, different. I avoided looking in the mirror and struggled with my confidence,โ€ Jovi shared.

Everything changed when she met Dr. Fairooz, whose expertise in advanced oculoplastic techniques offered her a second chance at a normal life.

Dr. Fairooz performed a socket reconstruction using a Dermis Fat Graft, a highly specialized technique that transplants living tissue from another part of the body to restore lost volume in the eye socket, ensuring a natural, comfortable fit for the prosthetic eye.

โ€œThis surgery required absolute precision, any misalignment could have affected not just her eye socket, but the entire symmetry of her face,โ€ explained Dr. Fairooz.

Over a three-hour procedure, the team meticulously deepened and reconstructed the socket to create the perfect foundation for her new eye.

Following 10 weeks of healing, Jovi was fitted with a custom-made prosthetic eye, expertly colour-matched to blend seamlessly with her natural features. Each stepโ€”from impression taking to final placementโ€”was executed with meticulous detail to ensure optimum aesthetic and functional results.
