Feasting on oily foods & artificial sweeteners slow down the movement of food through the digestive system, causing this very common problem — constipation.
The sudden change in diet, and insufficient quantities of fibre and water, hardens the waste (stool), making defecation irregular & painful. How can you avoid it?
Drink sufficient fluids during the non-fasting hours. Consuming water, unsweetened juices, low-fat or non-fat milk, etc., will maintain hydration and soften the waste.
Be it soup or Kabsa — include fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains in your dishes. These will help keep your bowel movements on track.
Most importantly, avoid overeating at Iftar. Stay away from processed, spicy, fatty, and fried foods that are often low in fibre and may worsen constipation.
Add 2 tsps of sabja (basil) seeds to your Iftar drink, or take 2-3 prunes for Suhoor — both are rich in insoluble fibres that ease digestion.
Chew thoroughly, savour every bite, and eat slowly. Eating with the presence of your mind is essential to improve digestion.
